Hung!

December 30, 2006 at 11:30 am (Politics)

Saddam Hussein, former President of Iraq was hanged today at 0300GMT. He was found guilty of “crimes against humanity” by the Iraqi court and sentenced to death by hanging on November 5th, 2006. I am not going to argue about the validity of the verdict but his execution was untimely.

For one it is going to add to the sense of being wronged a lot of Muslims around the world are feeling already. That holds all the more true for Saddam’s supporters or at the least admires. This execution will also add more fuel to fire as far as peace in Iraq is concerned since it will definitely infuriate the militants. For someone who wants peace in the region and stop all the bloodshed this is definitely a stupid move. Though as some people are saying, Saddam had to be silenced for good before he starts saying names.

Other than all of the political implications of the execution I don’t see how this it affects anyone. Statements like “end of a dark era”, “an important milestone” make no sense at all. Does the execution of Saddam make life less difficult for the Iraqis? Fact of the matter is a bomb killed 30 people just hours after the execution. I for one can’t stop noticing the ironic humor in these statements.

So does this entire saga liberate the Iraqis; the mission with which US entered Iraq to begin with? Does the execution of one tyrant make this world a better place to live in? Saddam was executed on charges of crimes against humanity; what about the civilian death toll in Iraq, the Israeli bombardment of Lebanon this summer and all those victims of war in Afghanistan?

Nanga Naach

December 29, 2006 at 8:49 pm (Humor, Life)

WOOHOO! Its 29th today and I am done with the papers. One of the three went pretty tight, the other two so so (This first one-4th course - also went tight). Lets just hope the instructors of those two courses show some mercy in grading. But that is over, done, finito, farigh and its party time now. In words of one of my good friends Aali, “Oye phir nanga naach?(Hey naked party after em?). Yea dude its nanga naach time ;).

On a side note - Even though I have been using this term in conjuction with my exams finishing dates fo quite a while now, a friend of mine -Amyn- was and has been very curious about it. He has been demanding one from me since the day I have mentioned it infront of him. I think he is either an in the closet gay or bi-curious.

Cursed

December 23, 2006 at 8:19 pm (Society)

A man murdered four of his relatives including a pregnant woman and a young girl. Why did he commit such a heinous crime? Because of the pressure on him to arrange for his sisters wedding dowry. After being caught by the police the man confessed to his crimes and begged the authorities to take some action against the people who demand dowry. He said that he wouldn’t have committed this crime if it wasn’t for the pressure from his parents to arrange for dowry. This man has clearly cracked under the stress and constant demands of money.

Dowry is a curse which has been a part of our society since forever. The biggest victims (as always) being the people belonging to the lower class. The government had passed a bill against dowry in 1976 but as it can clearly be seen from these murders that it is nothing but words on a piece of paper. Not only this, girls who are married without “enough” dowry are subjected to torture from both their husbands and in-laws.

While the government needs to ensure the enforcement of this bill, it alone can’t tackle this issue. Laws may force people to refrain from certain activities but the government can’t keep an eye on what happens behind closed doors. Things have to be done so as to remove these elements from the society.

The culprit in this case is not the man who killed; it’s the society which demands such illogical practices. A society which is invested with these utterly ludicrous customs being carried on from generation from generation under the label of tradition and culture. We need to educate the masses and develop enough intellect in them so that they can differentiate between traditions, culture and barbarism/jahalat. This way the society on its own will be able to recognize and get rid of these evil customs rather than being forced by law.

New Theme

December 21, 2006 at 1:45 am (Random)

Even though I was quite satisfied with my previous theme because of the ambiance it created I was compelled to change it because of its lack of widgets (those things on my sidebar →).

Though I wish this one was a bit more dark but its got a pretty cool shade of blue and well has quite a few widget options.

Contemplation

December 20, 2006 at 3:39 am (Life)

It’s been quite a while and I have more or less moved on. However, the memory remains and returns to haunt me from time to time. It’s funny how some things which you once thought could never get better can one day becomes things you wish you can forget. It’s ironic how a single thing can affect ones life from so many dimensions. No matter how much carefree, independent, confident or in control we might think we are there is always a factor in the equation which can twist things in ways beyond comprehension. It is that factor, that uncontrollable and unpredictable variable which can distract even the most steadfast minds; it is what makes us a slave of fate.

MSN Video - Still Fucking Brilliant

December 19, 2006 at 3:21 pm (Random)

After all the criticism I received on my post, MSN Video - Fucking Brilliant, from my more technically advanced buddies I decided to give it another shot and gauge how right or wrong I was. So this is what happened.

I looked up the MSN Video link in my Internet Explorer history and opened it (the one I had followed from Windows Messenger earlier). The browser processed for a minute or so and then it crashed.

Okay no sweat; I followed another MSN Video link from the advertisement in Windows Messenger. IE crashed again. I repeated this exercise twice or thrice times and that too at different times and every time I got the same result.

I had given up all hope on MSN Video by now but then I saw a bikini clad babe in the advertisement tab of Windows Messenger. I followed the link just for the heck of the bikini and surprisingly IE didn’t crash this time. WOOOHOOO! Anyways, the applet loaded then the video loaded and then the damn service greeted me with an advertisement (as in a video advertisement). After about a 15 – 30 sec long commercial it started loading the video I had requested. That “loading” again took its time – which was really quite long. When the video actually started playing it had glitches like any video stream, the only downside was that unlike Youtube where you can pause the video and let it load in the background MSN Video required me to play the video in order to stream it. This again was pretty annoying.

Needless to say I didn’t watch the whole video and since it was a clip from some newscast didn’t get to see the bikini babe in the amount of video I did see.

Brilliant, still fucking brilliant.

Blind

December 18, 2006 at 1:02 am (Life)

Some months back

Her: My class mates think that there is something going on between the two of us since we hang out a lot and almost do all of our work together.

Him: People are jackasses, they are narrow minded pricks. They cant see beyond chanay bazi in a girl boy relationship. If you know that you are friends with him, if you are telling me that you are friends with him then you are friends with him. You don’t have to satisfy anyone else about what it is between the two of you.

Today

Him(to himself): You were a jackass, aghh what the hell you are still a jackass. People can’t see beyond this people can’t see beyond that. The fact of the matter is you can’t see shit. Maybe the irony of all this is that you can still trust her with your life.
